WTA Madrid Open predictions

Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka both fell victim to enigmatic Latvian Jelena Ostapenko on the Stuttgart clay in their most recent matches but the WTA Tour's top two still dominate the market for the Madrid Open, which begins at La Caja Magica on Tuesday.

Swiatek lost out to her long-time nemesis at the quarter-final stage, which was perhaps no surprise given the lop-sided head-to-head record in Ostapenko's favour which now stands at 6-0, but Sabalenka's 6-4 6-1 defeat in Monday's final was more unexpected.

The pair have, however, dominated this tournament in recent years – Sabalenka won the Madrid title in 2021 and 2023 while Swiatek saw off the Belarusian in a pulsating final last year before going on to successes in Rome and Roland Garros.

But the Pole has not won a title since that French Open triumph more than ten months ago and has questions to answer as the European clay season kicks into top gear.

Sabalenka, better suited by high-altitude conditions in Madrid, is preferred of the top two and should at least win the first quarter given her main rivals are Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa, players she has dominated in the past.

The best outright bet could be Mirra Andreeva, who first came to attention in this event in 2023, reaching the last 16, before making the quarter-finals last year – Sabalenka ended her run on each occasion.

The 17-year-old offered further evidence that she's a future Grand Slam champion when she reached the semi-final of last year's French Open and she has made her mark at WTA 1000 level on more than one occasion this year, winning titles in Dubai and Indian Wells.

Andreeva's early career performances suggest she's at least as good on clay as she is on hard courts and, having beaten Sabalenka and Swiatek (twice) this year, she has nothing to fear in Madrid.
