Wimbledon Match in Focus

Taylor Fritz vs Jordan Thompson

Taylor Fritz has played 14 sets in his first three matches at Wimbledon but he relishes a battle and his form looks superior to that of his fourth-round opponent, Jordan Thompson.

The Californian has seen off three decent players in Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Gabriel Diallo and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and there looks to be plenty more left in his tank.

Thompson is also improving with experience but his singles race is likely to end in the last 16.

Adrian Humphries' verdict
Taylor Fritz -4.5 games handicap

Day seven Longshot

Andrey Rublev – 8-1

Delicate perfectionist Andrey Rublev has been bemoaning many things on the court, but there's little wrong with the way the 14th seed is playing.

Carlos Alcaraz is clearly more likely to win than lose against Rublev but it's questionable if the price of the capable outsider, who beat the dual Wimbledon champion on clay in his Spanish homeland last year, should be as big as it is.

Sunday's Wimbledon predictions

Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and Aryna Sabalenka head the bill on day seven of Wimbledon and there's plenty to get excited about for British tennis fans with Cameron Norrie and Sonay Kartal aiming to extend their stays in the singles events.

Norrie and Kartal have been going great guns and are not easy to oppose after their sterling efforts at the All England Club this year, but the duo may be thwarted by a couple of talented performers.

Nicolas Jarry vs Cameron Norrie predictions

Nicolas Jarry reminded tennis fans that he is more than just a one-trick pony with his victory over highly touted youngster Joao Fonseca and the tall Chilean is in such good fettle that he could well have the beating of Britain's Cameron Norrie.

Norrie has done a good job of stepping things up at Wimbledon this year – the 2021 Indian Wells Masters has seen off Roberto Bautista Agut, 12th seed Frances Tiafoe and Mattia Bellucci to progress to the last 16.

But while Jarry's level has always been slightly tough to evaluate, considering South America is not known for producing many big-serving giants, the 6ft 7in Santiago native provided clues years ago on clay and hard courts that his game is pretty complete.

The head-to-heads also provide some encouragement for a bet on Jarry too. Norrie edged their most recent encounter 6-3 4-6 7-6 on clay in the Rome Masters in 2019, but the year before that Jarry had beaten the Briton 7-6 6-2 on a hard court in the Miami Masters.

Karen Khachanov vs Kamil Majchrzak predictions

Karen Khachanov leads Kamil Majchrzak, his fourth-round opponent at Wimbledon, 3-0 in their personal series but there was little between the players in their most recent encounter, which ended 5-7 7-5 7-6 on grass in Den Bosch in 2022.

A doping ban meant Majchrzak missed all of 2023 but his form this year only picked up a little in late March, when the European clay season started.

The grass prep events did not really suggest that Majchrzak might burst into form in the London Slam, but his victories at the All England Club over Matteo Berrettini, Ethan Quinn and Arthur Rinderknech mean his challenge should be taken seriously.

Khachanov has shown his mastery of brinkmanship in fighting back to pip Shintaro Mochizuki and Nuno Borges in five-setters, but Majchrzak may prove a slightly more stubborn opponent for the Halle semi-finalist.

Sonay Kartal vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova predictions

Sonay Kartal's victories over Viktoriya Tomova and Diane Parry were not surprises and the Briton's best match result at Wimbledon came when she upset Jelena Ostapenko in round one.

Kartal is doing herself proud and there may be better to come but at the prices she can be opposed with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who is one of the best players never to have won a Grand Slam singles title.

Pavlyuchenkova has fought back from the loss of the opening set twice in her first three matches, against Ajla Tomljanovic and Naomi Osaka, so she is clearly not lacking belief at this stage of the tournament.

Former world number one Osaka is showing signs that she may not be far from her peak, so Pavlyuchenkova's form could be decent.
