Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction

John McEnroe, one of the greatest commentators the sporting world has known, hit the nail on the head yet again when remarking that the Wimbledon semi-final between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz was possibly the best-quality match ever contested on grass.

Many eyes had been focused on Jannik Sinner's last-four clash, which proved to be a damp squib as the 38-year-old seven-time All England Club champion Novak Djokovic offered little resistance against the top seed.

But Fritz is inching gradually closer to becoming one of just a few players able to compete with the top two, and dual champion Alcaraz was given a stern test of his title-retaining credentials. It was a test the Spaniard passed with flying colours.

Alcaraz is unbeaten since early May with title triumphs in the Rome Masters, French Open and at the Queen's Club and, unsurprisingly, he had been looking a little jaded in his early outings at Wimbledon.

But in his last two outings, the world number two has stepped up the quality of his performances and against fifth seed Fritz, who took his tennis to a new level in his 6-4 5-7 6-3 7-6 defeat, Alcaraz was superb and playing better than ever on the green terrain.

If that is the case, and the effect of 24 consecutive match victories doesn't suddenly catch up with him, a scenario which appears unlikely given his youthful effervescence, then it seems Sinner has much to do in his first Wimbledon singles final.

Sinner himself has been playing superbly well in London in the last two weeks. Improving young talent Ben Shelton and Djokovic were both swept aside in straight sets, but the world number one got lucky in the last 16 when Grigor Dimitrov had to retire due to injury in the third set after winning the first two against the Italian.

Dimitrov is capable of producing brilliance on certain days, but that match still shows that Sinner can be vulnerable on occasions. Would Dimitrov have taken a two-set lead against Alcaraz? Unlikely.

Alcaraz has beaten Sinner nine times in 13 meetings and that the reigning grass king has won his last five meetings with the Australian and US Open champion.

Their most recent major final clash in the French Open could be a big pointer to Sinner, who won the first two sets before Alcaraz mounted an incredible fightback to retain the clay crown.

Alcaraz won 88 per cent of his first serves against Fritz on Friday, when Sinner's first-serve percentage in defeating Djokovic was 81. Regarding percentage of second-serve points won, Sinner's 63 was slightly better than Alcaraz's 57.

So if Alcaraz serves well in the final and gets in a healthy number of first serves, his superior array of groundstrokes and exceptional balance and stability on the terrain should carry him to  a three-peat in the London Slam.
