Jannik Sinner vs Novak Djokovic prediction

World number one Jannik Sinner breezed past Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the French Open semi-final last month, but there are reasons to believe their last-four rumble at Wimbledon will be a far more fiercely-contested encounter.

Sinner’s 6-4 7-5 7-6 success over Djokovic at Roland Garros in June took his winning run over the legendary Serb to five, but competing on grass could be a great leveller as the Italian seeks to secure a first Wimbledon final.

Djokovic, now 38, is evidently coming towards the end of his illustrious career. However, the Serb still has ambitions of equalling Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and very few handle these hallowed turfs as well as he can.

Djokovic added his seventh Wimbledon crown in 2022 but runner-up efforts in the last two years to Carlos Alcaraz mean that he is aiming to reach a seventh straight All England Club final.

It has been a relatively smooth passage through to the final four for Djokovic, whose only seeded scalps have been Alex De Minaur and Flavio Cobolli in the last two rounds.

But keeping something in reserve could be key for this clash with Sinner and he will be buoyed by the fact that both previous Wimbledon meetings went his way.

In 2022 Djokovic edged a thrilling five-set contest against Sinner in the quarter-final, while a year later he repeated the feat with a more authoritative 6-3 6-4 7-6 victory at this semi-final stage.

Sinner, a subsequent three-time Grand Slam champion, has evidently come on leaps and bounds since then, but grass may still be his most vulnerable surface.

The Italian needed some fortune during his fourth-round clash with Grigor Dimitrov as the Bulgarian raced into a two-set lead before being forced to retire hurt with a pectoral injury.

Sinner did go a long way to quash any concerns with a 3-0 win over Ben Shelton in the quarter-final, but that victory featured only two breaks of serve and Djokovic is likely to be a much tougher nut to crack.

Only twice in ten previous meetings has Djokovic failed to win a set against Sinner and on his beloved grass, where his game remains perfectly suited, he has genuine claims of coming out on top.
