Richard Gasquet poured cold water on Andy Murray's emotional singles return with a straight-sets success in the Cincinnati Masters but Dominic Thiem could prove a bridge too far in the next round.

Murray was playing his first singles match since January's career-saving hip surgery and did not land a groundstroke winner in the 6-4 6-4 defeat until the fourth game of the second set.

Punters should therefore not read too much into the win for Gasquet, and the Frenchman's next opponent Thiem could prove a cut above in the round of 32.

Thiem added an Austrian Open title to his BNP Paribas Open success to cap off an excellent run on clay and looked in good nick on hard courts with a quarter-finals berth in the Rogers Cup.

He is eyeing his second Masters 1000 title of the season and looks value to sweep aside Gasquet in the softer half of the draw.

Elina Svitolina claimed the scalps of Katerina Siniakova and Belinda Bencic on her way to the Rogers Cup last eight, in which she pushed Sofia Kenin all the way, losing 7-6 6-4.

She is worth backing in the next round against Belgian Elise Mertens, whose recent run of form includes a straight-sets loss to unseeded Kristie Ahn in the hard-court Silicon Valley Classic.
