US Open day nine preview

Naomi Osaka vs Coco Gauff predictions

Much has been made of Gauff's recent serving struggles during the first week of the US Open. The 21-year-old has the most double faults on the women's tour, and the issues were in evidence in her hard-fought first-round win over Ajla Tomljanovic, in which she served ten doubles.

Gauff, the US Open winner in 2023, has firmed up all aspects of her game during the first week, and served only four double faults in a 6-3 6-1 demolition of 28th seed Magdalena Frech in the third round.

On that evidence she is a worthy favourite to beat her fourth-round opponent Osaka, however, Gauff's serve will face a much stiffer examination from the powerful Japanese player.

Osaka, seeded 23rd and a two-time US Open champion prior to taking a break from tennis, arrived in fine form having reached the final in Montreal and her third-round appearance at Wimbledon equalled her career-best effort there.

Gauff leads the head-to-head 3-2, although they were one set apiece when Osaka had to retire during their most recent meeting in Beijing last year.

The pair should again be evenly matched, but with Osaka likely to put a lot more pressure on French Open champion Gauff's serve than Frech did in the last round, she looks worth backing at the prices.

Lorenzo Musetti vs Jaume Munar predictions

Another outsider who is worth taking a punt on is Jaume Munar, who boasts a 4-1 head-to-head advantage over his fourth-round opponent Lorenzo Musetti.

Tenth seed Musetti arrived in New York having lost five of his previous six matches, and he could well be flattered by his opening three wins.

His first two opponents, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and David Goffin, were both similarly out of form, while third-round opponent Flavio Cobolli looked physically drained prior to retiring in the third set.

Munar, on the other hand, is enjoying his best season on hard courts, with a 15-9 record. This is the first time the 29-year-old has reached the second week of a Grand Slam, and buoyed by the confidence of his record against Musetti, the Spaniard can upset the odds.
