Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula prediction
This US Open semi-final is a repeat of last season’s title decider at Flushing Meadows, where Aryna Sabalenka was in no mood to be denied as she triumphed 7-5 7-5 in a contest which featured ten breaks of serve.
That brought a third Grand Slam title for the world number one and, having finished runner-up at the Australian Open and the French equivalent this season, she will be desperate to get another shot at adding to her Major haul.
For home favourite Jessica Pegula, opportunities to get off the mark in Grand Slam competition are wearing thin as this is only the second time that the 31-year-old has made the last four of a Major.
Sabalenka has won seven of their nine previous meetings 2-0, which includes another title showdown in Miami in March, and it is hard to see how the American can live with her opponent’s power and intensity and do enough to get a vocal home crowd on side.
Sabalenka also has the benefit of having received a walk-over in a potentially tricky quarter-final encounter with Marketa Vondrousova, who boasts a decent record against the top seed but was forced out of things with a knee injury.
So not only is the defending champion fresh but she looks completely focused too, having won all four of her US Open assignments 2-0 and not spent over one hour and 40 minutes on court in any of them.
The world number one has been broken only twice and, vitally, the winners are outweighing the unforced errors which is when she is at her dominant best.
Pegula is also yet to drop a set but, while the latest scalp of two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova reads well, Sabalenka is a different proposition and especially dangerous on her beloved hard courts.
The Belarusian has won the last five hard-court Slam semi-finals she has contested, four of which resulted in comfortable 2-0 successes.
