Roger Federer had started the US Open slowly, but the Swiss legend stepped things up against Britain's Dan Evans in a 6-2 6-2 6-1 third-round mauling in New York.

Federer, who won the Flushing Meadows major five times in a row between 2004 and 2008, was trimmed to 13-2 from 7-1 for this year's title after the win.

Tunisian battler Ons Jabeur gave women's third seed Karolina Pliskova a scare before the Czech ace edged home 6-1 4-6 6-4.

US Open best outright prices at 6.30pm last night – men: 6-4 N Djokovic, 2 R Nadal, 13-2 R Federer, 16 N Kyrgios, D Medvedev, 35 A Zverev, 50 bar; women: 14-5 S Williams, 7 B Andreescu, 8 A Barty, Karolina Pliskova, 10 N Osaka, 12 M Keys, 25 bar.
