Tournament previews

ATP Andalucia Open

The European clay-court season starts in low-key fashion this week with ATP action in the form of the Andalucia Open, which will be staged for one year only at Marbella's Club Puente Romano.

Alexander Zverev accepted a wildcard into the event but pulled out due to injury, as did Andrey Rublev. Those defections have left Pablo Carreno Busta as the number one seed in a weak field.

The Spaniard has claims but Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo posted a number of impressive results on clay in South America earlier in the season, reaching the Buenos Aires final as a qualifier, and he looks the best bet at the prices.

ATP Sardegna Open

Two Italians dominate the market for the ATP Sardegna Open, with the hugely promising Lorenzo Musetti and his namesake Lorenzo Sonego disputing favouritism in Cagliari.

Musetti reached the semi-finals of this event in November as an 18-year-old and is feared again but he's just 4-1 to win his first ATP World Tour event and he can be taken on with Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The Georgian is hard to catch right but he won the Qatar Open last month, beating Roger Federer on the way, and, given an easy draw, his price looks an overreaction to two subsequent defeats.

WTA Charleston Open

The best tournament of the week comes on the WTA Tour and the Charleston Open, where world number one Ashleigh Barty bids to transfer her Miami Open form on to the green clay.

The Aussie ace, a French Open champion in 2019, is the one to beat but another former Roland Garros queen looks capable of going well from a decent draw.

Garbine Muguruza has enjoyed a fine start to 2021, winning in Dubai and reaching two other finals, and looking as consistent as she has in some years.

The 27-year-old has received a bye to the last 32 and will then face a winnable last-16 match before a potential quarter-final meeting with Petra Kvitova. From there she could go all the way.

WTA Copa Colsanitas

Exciting Danish teenager Clara Tauson tops the betting for the WTA Copa Colsanitas in Bogota but she can be taken on with in-form Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Sorribes Tormo won the Guadalajara Open, reached the semi-finals in Monterrey and the quarters in Miami and, back on a surface she knows well, the 24-year-old looks poised to go well again.
