Sascha basher Kohlschreiber is unlikely to KO Nishikori

Philipp Kohlschreiber, who is playing well in the Indian summer of his career, ended his fellow German Sascha Zverev's hopes of collecting a first Grand Slam crown in round three of the US Open but the veteran will do well to follow up on Labor Day against Kei Nishikori.

After an injury-hit 2017, the Japanese ace started this year guardedly and contested a couple of Challenger Tour events in the United States instead of travelling to the Australian Open.

It did not take Nishikori long before he returned to the top echelon and the Monte Carlo Masters finalist has played himself into such decent form that he can be considered a lively outsider to nail his first Slam win.

Only big-hitters will be taking the win odds about the 21st seed defeating Kohlschreiber, but Nishikori can still be considered to make light of a handicap concession of 4.5 games.

The selection has seen off three good players in Max Marterer, Gael Monfils and Diego Schwartz­man. He looks to be enjoying his tennis and can be supported.

Sabalenka v Osaka
Aryna Sabalenka is tennis's latest 'it' girl and the Belarusian should enjoy a excellent future at or near the WTA Tour's top level.

However, while punters were supporting Sabalenka to kick on after dumping Petra Kvitova 7-5 6-1 in round three in New York, anyone thinking of having an interest in her next singles outing against Naomi Osaka should consider the bigger picture.

At some point in the next few days Sabalenka, who went all the way in New Haven on the eve of the US Open, is likely to start feeling some fatigue.

Add to that the fact that she is taking on arguably the brightest young talent in the women's game and Sabalenka backers should exercise even more caution.

Osaka, who stated her career intentions with a title triumph in Indian Wells in March, blitzed in-form Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-0 6-0 in the last 32 and so it's a slight surprise to see the Japanese number one outsider to end Sabalenka's winning run.

Vondrousova v Tsurenko
Marketa Vondrousova is doing her best work since winning the indoor title in Biel-Bienne last year, but the Czech may have her work cut out in her next Big Apple outing.

Lesia Tsurenko, who advertised her love of American hardcourts with successive title victories in Acapulco this year and last, looks a real player these days and the 29-year-old Ukrainian has got herself in peak fitness for the season's concluding Grand Slam.

She surprised many observers when ousting Australian Open champ Caroline Wozniacki in the last 64 and continued in dominant fashion when denying Katerina Siniakova in round three.

Bookmakers are taking no chances on Tsurenko against Vondrousova, who is not the physically strongest of perform­ers, and the favourite can be chanced to successfully concede a handicap start of 2.5 games.

It should be a routine day's work for Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, but Alex de Minaur's conqueror Marin Cilic may again have to dig deep against David Goffin.

Madison Keys could well make it five wins in as many matches against Dominika Cibulkova, but Maria Sharapova's fine third-round win over Jelena Ostapenko does not necessarily mean she is going to have things all her own way against Carla Suarez Navarro.
