Rafael Nadal eased past Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets on Friday and the world number one can make similarly light work of Alexander Zverev in the reverse singles in Spain’s Davis Cup quarter-final battle with Germany.

Nadal’s snug 6-4 6-2 6-2 success over Kohlschreiber was his first match since retiring from the Australian Open in January and the triumph gave him a new Davis Cup record for combined singles and doubles victories with 23 in a row.

The Spaniard hardly put a foot wrong on his return and a repeat should be good enough to outgun Zverev, who is not at his happiest on the red clay.

Zverev is an admirable player but his three meetings with Nadal have all ended in defeat and their only clash on clay brought a 6-1 6-1 demolition by the Spaniard.

Nadal, a ten-time winner at Roland Garros, is almost impossible to beat on clay when fully tuned-up and he looks a good bet to win without dropping a set.

The other singles match in the Spain and Germany duel sees veteran David Ferrer tackle Kohlschreiber.

Recommendation
R Nadal to win 3-0
