Tournament preview

A memorable year is drawing to a close for Novak Djokovic but the super Serbian isn't calling time on his season just yet as he returns for the first time since the US Open in this week's Paris Masters.

Bookmakers rate Djokovic, who lost in the final of US Open to Daniil Medvedev in September, a short-priced favourite to claim the title in the French capital despite his recent lack of game time.

After all, he has won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year and beyond fifth seed Andrey Rublev and improving Brit Cameron Norrie, there isn't too much for him to worry about in his quarter of the Paris draw.

That said, there is better value to be had elsewhere.

A handful of players competing will know that lifting the title could also secure them one of the two remaining qualifying berths for the end-of-year ATP Finals.

Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, Jannik Sinner and Norrie are all in contention for the final two places - the top six spots are already secured - and Sinner, in particular, looks an intriguing participant.

The Italian, 20, has enjoyed another strong season and shows no signs of slowing down heading into this week's tournament.

He defeated Reilly Opelka and Ruud on his way to the semi-finals of the recent Vienna Open after claiming the Sofia Open and European Open titles earlier in October.

And there was a lot to like about his run to the fourth round of the US Open back in September, when he was eventually defeated by Olympic champion Alex Zverev.

With the ATP Finals being played in his homeland this year, the Italian's motivation could be greater than that of some of his rivals and he also finds himself in a relatively soft section.

Beyond second seed Medvedev, who he cannot meet until the quarter-finals, Sinner's toughest potential opponents in his quarter are probably 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta and the promising but inexperienced Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner has a great chance of making the last eight and is a nice price to go all the way.
