Madison Keys could have too much for clay upstart Vekic

Croat may find it hard to follow up Suarez Navarro win

Donna Vekic took Carla Suarez Navarro apart in her Rome opener, but the Croat may struggle to do the same to Madison Keys in a second-round clash in the Italian capital.

Vekic is a hugely promising performer but she is not normally synonymous with clay-court proficiency and her opening win may say more about Suarez Navarro, who may have been jaded after her exertions in Madrid winning only three games against her opponent.

Keys made light work of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, ousting the Russian 6-4 6-1, and the American is such a solid performer on any surface when she hits peak form that it's difficult to oppose her.

Vekic is obviously the outsider in this one, but it's the 8-13 on offer about the favourite that's of interest.

In the men's action, Fabio Fognini can be considered either to win a set or on total-games handicaps for his clash with Madrid finalist Dominic Thiem, who may be jaded.

But Fognini is not exactly a byword for trust on a court and even though he did a tidy job dismissing Gael Monfils 6-3 6-1 in his opener, another big performance is far from guaranteed.
