Kyle Edmund's marvellous Madrid run can continue
Lack of clay-court experience set to hinder Shapovalov
ATP Madrid Open
Sky Sports Arena, midday Friday
Kyle Edmund continued his impressive run at the Madrid Open with a 6-3 6-3 victory over eighth seed David Goffin and looks value to topple 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov in the quarter-finals.
The British number one has made impressive strides this year – climbing from 50th in the rankings – and is assured of breaking into the top 20 by the start of next week.
He has had two wins and two losses against Shapovalov but was a 6-7 7-6 6-4 victor over the Canadian teenager at the Brisbane International earlier this year.
Edmund has always had an effective, aggressive game and his fitness has improved, allowing him to outlast Novak Djokovic and score an eye-catching 6-3 2-6 6-3 victory in the second round.
Given Djokovic's problems this year, it is wise not to put too much emphasis on Edmund's victory over the Serb.
However, the Briton's performance against Goffin, the world number ten, is an indication that his rise up the rankings may have scope to continue.
Shapovalov has made good progress this year but he is contesting his first major clay-court quarter-final and his lack of experience may count against him.
