Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction

Having shared the last five Grand Slam titles between them, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have unsurprisingly again risen to supremacy to make the French Open final.

The best two players on the planet who are likely to dominate for many years to come get set for their fourth Grand Slam encounter, although this is the first time they have met in a showpiece final.

World number one Sinner is yet to drop a set on his way to the title decider in Paris, having made it six straight-set successes with his semi-final victory over Novak Djokovic in only his second tournament appearance since winning the Australian Open in January.

That is because the Italian had to endure a three-month doping ban and some bookmakers have been so impressed with his performance at Roland Garros that he is serving it up to pre-tournament favourite Alcaraz in the betting.

However Alcaraz, 6-5 favourite before a ball had been served, is the defending champion and while he has dropped sets in four of his six wins in Paris, there is a sense that he is leaving something in reserve.

The key factor could be that the Spaniard is far more assured on this slower terrain and he has won three of his four clay-court meetings with Sinner, which includes a five-set win in last season's French Open semi-final as well as victory in a title decider in Rome last month.

Alcaraz prevailed 7-6 6-1 in Sinner's homeland in May and, while the Italian has understandably come on for that outing, it is difficult to see roles being reversed in the French capital.

The second seed can go through lulls in his matches - he had to come from a set behind in his semi-final victory over Lorenzo Musetti - but when it matters he delivers and his unpredictability makes this a difficult test for Sinner.

The Italian was a straight-sets winner over Djokovic in the final four but that encounter still lasted 35 games and it was only two breaks of serve which proved the difference.

Both players have won a set in nine of the 13 meetings between the pair and that scenario looks likely again, especially as favourite Alcaraz has dropped a set in tournament wins over Fabian Marozsan, Damir Dzumhur, Ben Shelton and Musetti.

But a gruelling encounter could play to the strengths of the Spaniard, principally as Sinner has played only 12 competitive matches since January, and Alcaraz has won all four Grand Slam finals he has contested including last season’s French Open.

The pair get pushed to greater heights by the other and the gifted and flashy shot-maker Alcaraz can extend his record of eight wins in 13 meetings with Sinner to again reign supreme at Roland Garros.
