Aryna Sabalenka vs Iga Swiatek prediction
Iga Swiatek’s recent dominance at the French Open has earned her the nickname ‘Queen of Clay', but the Polish phenomenon could be dethroned in this semi-final showdown with world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
It may seem unusual for a player who has won four of the last French Open crowns, including each of the last three, to be considered a slight outsider at a venue where she has been beaten only twice in 42 matches spanning over seven years.
However, this season has been one of struggle for the five-time Grand Slam champion, who has not won a title – or reached a final – since reigning supreme in Paris 12 months ago.
That is remarkable for a someone of Swiatek’s stature and goes a long way to explaining why she has tumbled down to number five in the world rankings.
In her three clay-court events in the build-up to Roland Garros, Swiatek suffered shock defeats to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart, Coco Gauff in Madrid and Danielle Collins in Rome and she should find herself fortunate to still be standing in Paris.
That is because in her fourth-round showdown with Elena Rybakina, Swiatek trailed 6-1 2-0 before finding something deep from within to turn the tables.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Iga Swiatek - 2025 French Open results
| Round | Aryna Sabalenka | Iga Swiatek |
| First | Kamilla Rakhimova (6-1 6-0) | Rebecca Sramkova (6-3 6-3) |
| Second | Jil Teichmann (6-3 6-1) | Emma Raducanu (6-1 6-2) |
| Third | Olga Danilovic (6-2 6-3) | Jacqueline Cristian (6-2 7-5) |
| Fourth | Amanda Anisimova (7-5 6-3) | Elena Rybakina (1-6 6-3 7-5) |
| Quarter-finals | Qinwen Zheng (7-6 6-3) | Elina Svitolina (6-1 7-5) |
However, a start so sluggish against Sabalenka is likely to be punished and the brute force of the Belarusian may give her the upper hand and allow her to unsettle her opponent early.
The top seed is bidding to make her first French Open final but she has eased to five straight-set successes at Roland Garros and claiming her third Madrid Open title in May shows that her clay-court game is improving.
The start of this campaign has been another successful one for Sabalenka, who has made six finals with three title wins, and she has lost only three of her 31 matches since the beginning of March.
Swiatek, in stark contrast, has lost five of her 23 matches in the same period, dropping at least a set in eight of her last 15 contests, and showing an air of vulnerability that we have not been accustomed to.
Sabalenka believes that she is stronger than ever after beating Qinwen Zheng 7-6 6-3 in the quarter-final and, oozing with confidence, she may simply relish this blockbuster battle more than Swiatek does.
