Lorenzo Musetti v David Goffin

David Goffin crashed out in the first round of last year’s French Open against emerging talent Jannik Sinner and the Belgian 13th seed may be sent packing early again by another Italian youngster who looks destined for big things.

Italian tennis is in a healthy place with Sinner joining Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego and Fabio Fognini in the world’s top 30, and teenage sensation Lorenzo Musetti is another who could soon follow in their footsteps.

The 19-year-old, who is appearing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time, has already risen to 76th in the world and has reached three finals on the Challenger Tour.

Clay appears to be Musetti’s favoured surface and the form of his recent run to the semi-finals in Lyon looks strong.

Musetti claimed the scalps of world number 21 Felix Auger Aliassime, Sebastian Korda, who has subsequently landed a competitive Challenger event in Parma, and Aljaz Bedene before bumping into eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Even so, Musetti clinched the opening set against Tsitsipas, which is some feat considering the Greek star is widely anticipated to challenge for French Open glory.

Goffin is a classy performer but he is often vulnerable, particularly on clay, and he arrives in the French capital having suffered straight-sets defeats to Federico Delbonis in Rome and Bedene in Lyon.

Reilly Opelka v Andrej Martin

The opening round of a Grand Slam consists largely of mismatches and it can be difficult pinpointing value, but there are reasons to support outsider Andrej Martin in his clash with Reilly Opelka.

Martin is a prolific winner on the Challenger Tour - he has scooped 12 titles and finished runner-up a further seven times - and last week's performances in Belgrade highlighted what a dangerous player he can be on clay.

The Slovak recorded wins over seeds Nikoloz Basilashvili and Dusan Lajovic before taking world number one and home favourite Novak Djokovic to a deciding set in the semi-finals.

A reproduction of those efforts would see him cause plenty of problems for big-serving American Opelka, whose game is better suited to a faster surface.

Opelka made the last four in Rome a fortnight ago and is a worthy favourite, but perhaps there is too much disparity in the prices.

Nadia Podoroska v Belinda Bencic

Nadia Podoroska sprang a surprise to reach the semi-finals of last year's French Open and she is a strong favourite to seal a first-round victory over Belinda Bencic.

The Argentinian feels at home on this slower terrain and there was enough in recent appearances in Rome and Belgrade to suggest she is operating close to the top of her game.

Bencic, on the other hand, has played in this event only twice since 2015 and has not gone beyond the third round. The Swiss star is much happier when competing on grass or a hard court.
