Tuesday preview

With the US Open fast approaching, competition in Cincinnati is one of the final opportunities for players to get their game in top shape, and there are plenty of stars on show on Tuesday hoping they can hit the ground running.

Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios and impressive Italian youngster Jannik Sinner take to the court but their matches look set to be overshadowed by the mouthwatering first-round clash between 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams and Britain's defending US Open heroine Emma Raducanu.

However, that looks a tricky match to call between two players struggling to find peak form and there is better value to be had with Beatriz Haddad Maia against Jelena Ostapenko.

It’s a quick turnaround for Haddad Maia following her run to the final in Toronto on Sunday, but she is hard to ignore at odds-against given her long list of impressive scalps in Canada.

The Brazilian overcame Leylah Fernandez, Iga Swiatek, Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova - four genuine top-20 performers - before running out of a puff in a three-set defeat to Simona Halep in the final.

Ostapenko, meanwhile, lost to Alison Riske in the second round in Canada and her hard-hitting style means she tends to make plenty of unforced errors, which could leave her vulnerable against such an in-form rival.

In the men’s event, the best wager is for Tommy Paul to get the better of his younger American compatriot Jenson Brooksby.

Paul has been a model of consistency this season, winning ten of his last 15 matches, while Brooksby remains difficult to predict and has lost three of his last four starts.

Paul reached the last 16 at Wimbledon in early-July and comes into this on the back of a quarter-final appearance in Montreal, where he defeated world number four Carlos Alcaraz as well as resurgent Croat Marin Cilic.
