Day six preview
There is a winner-takes-all clash in the ATP Tour Finals Tokyo Group with Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev scrapping to join Daniil Medvedev in the last four.
Neither player offered much resistance in defeat to red-hot Russian Medvedev, but they were both too strong for Diego Schwartzman and whoever wins will go through.
Djokovic dominated this event from 2012 to 2015, claiming the silverware in four consecutive years, but that hasn’t been the case in his recent London appearances.
The Serb was defeated by Zverev in the 2018 final and last year he failed to navigate his way through the group stages after suffering defeats to Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem.
Djokovic eased past Schwartzman in straight sets, but he was way below his best against Medvedev as he hit 24 unforced errors and made five double faults in a 6-3 6-3 loss.
The Serb lost seven consecutive games in that reverse and he was unable to match the desire of Medvedev, which implies his quotes of 1-3 are short enough.
In fact, Djokovic has lost three of his last six competitive matches - Lorenzo Sonego dumped him out in the quarter-finals in Vienna just under a fortnight ago - and a busy end to the season may be taking its toll.
Zverev was also outclassed by Medvedev and he needed three sets to stop Schwartzman, but he won this event in 2018 and was a semi-finalist last year.
The German reached the final of the US Open in September to suggest he is edging closer to a top-tier success and he has managed to win three of his six meetings with the world number one.
Djokovic is rightly favourite but on current evidence he is vulnerable and Zverev can carve out enough break-point opportunities to spring an upset.
Medvedev meets Schwartzman in the evening match, hoping to record a third consecutive straight-sets win.
While that looks likely given Djokovic and Zverev both toppled Schwartzman and he has dropped just one set in winning all four previous meetings with the Argentinian, quotes of 4-7 about him doing so can be left alone.
