ATP Rotterdam

Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev and emerging star Jannik Sinner were late withdrawals but Rotterdam has still attracted a decent field with three of the world’s top ten in attendance.

Greek talent Stefanos Tsitsipas, defending champion Andrey Rublev and classy Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime are the three big hitters hoping for some Dutch delight, while there is British interest, too, with Cameron Norrie and Andy Murray also heading to the Netherlands.

Denis Shapovalov and Hubert Hurkacz also figure prominently in a competitive betting heat but at the prices it is Auger-Aliassime who gets the vote of confidence.

Astonishingly, the Montreal man still awaits his first title on the ATP Tour but it is surely only a matter of time until he gets his hands on some much-deserved silverware.

The 21-year-old has all the weapons to be a raving success and, although all eight of his final appearances have resulted in defeat, it is difficult to knock his temperament.

The world number nine made the last eight of last month’s Australian Open - that was a third straight Grand Slam quarter-final appearance for the Canadian - and he has a decent draw to work with.

Auger-Aliassime kicks his tournament off against a qualifier and avoids Tsitsipas, Shapovalov and Hurkacz until the final, so merits support at odds of 5-1.

The youngster had led Medvedev by two sets before falling to defeat in the Australian Open quarter-final, having previously accounted for Emil Ruusuvuori, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Dan Evans and Marin Cilic, and that is the best recent form on offer.

WTA St Petersburg

There is also a high-class tournament taking place on the WTA Tour in St Petersburg, where Maria Sakkari and Anett Kontaveit are the leading attractions.

Estonian ace Kontaveit heads the betting but she has a bit to prove after her second-round exit to Clara Tauson at the Australian Open and has plenty of early obstacles to overcome.

World number eight Sakkari, who is the tournament's top seed, is sure to have her backers after her run to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

However, the top half of the draw looks super competitive, so a chance should be taken on Jelena Ostapenko.

The Latvian's career has stalled since she sprung a surprise to lift the French Open in 2017, but she has added two titles since that success and is still capable of world-class performances.

The 24-year-old showed her capabilities when making the semi-finals at the Indian Wells Masters in October and her efforts at the Australian Open, where she took Barbora Krejcikova to three sets in the third round, were also very respectable.

This is a drop in grade and the seventh seed has a decent draw to work with, so can put in a bold bid at double-figure odds.
