Andrey Rublev knocked three-time ATP Open 13 champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out of the tournament on Tuesday and the young Russian has an excellent chance of beating Mikhail Kukushkin in the quarter-finals in Marseille.

The 21-year-old, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2017 US Open and has been as high as 31st in the world, struggled with injury throughout 2018 but now looks to be back to his best and ready to climb back up the rankings.

Rublev possesses a powerful, ground-heavy game when on song and he unleashed it to full effect against Tsonga in his opening match and followed up with a comfortable victory over promising Italian Matteo Berrettini.

The Russian drifted before that encounter, but made a mockery of the markets by posting a 6-3 7-6 win. He looks primed to reach his first semi-final since the ATP Citi Open in August.

Kukushkin leads 3-1 on their head-to-head meetings but one of those victories came in 2015, when Rublev was a little-known wildcard, and the other two were last year when the 21-year-old looked out of form for much of the campaign.

He can make amends and tee up a winnable semi-final against Ugo Humbert or Matthias Bachinger.
