Tournament previews

Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune have all withdrawn from this year's ATP Next Gen Finals, making for an open tournament in Milan.

Rune was the latest to drop out of the tournament, which has showcased the best youngsters in the men's game since 2017, after beating Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final on Sunday.

But his absence opens the doors for others and Italy's Lorenzo Musetti and Jack Draper of Great Britain have taken the top two seeds.

But third seed Brandon Nakashima of the USA could represent better value after an impressive hard-court season in which he made the third round of the US Open, won the San Diego Open and reached the quarter-finals of the Firenze Open in Florence.

Nakashima is the highest-ranked player in the Green Group, which also features Jiri Lehecka, Francesco Passaro and Rune's replacement Matteo Arnaldi, and he should fancy his chances of making the knockouts and going the distance.

The premier international team event in women's tennis - the Billie Jean King Cup - also starts on Tuesday in Glasgow.

The event begins with a group phase in which 12 nations are split into four groups of three with the top team in each group progressing to the knockout phase.

Poland will be missing Iga Swiatek for the event but the USA look strong with three of their players inside the top 15 in the WTA rankings.
