BMW Open betting preview

Alexander Zverev is the star attraction at the ATP BMW Open this week but even with the support of a home crowd, the German looks short enough as the 7-4 tournament favourite.

Zverev is a two-time champion on the Munich clay but his two most recent visits have been underwhelming - he was beaten by Cristian Garin in 2019 and Ilya Ivashka in 2021 - while his results this year have been mixed.

Second seed Casper Ruud, ranked seventh on the ATP World Tour and a serial winner over the last two seasons, is the man most likely to deny the favourite but, from the same side of the draw, it's Miomir Kecmanovic who makes more appeal at much bigger odds.

The 22-year-old Serb claimed his first ATP title on clay in Kitzbuhel in September 2020 and while silverware has proved elusive since, recent results suggest that his turn might not be far away.

Kecmanovic began the season by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and he has been remarkably consistent since, reaching the quarter-finals of his last five events, including at Indian Wells and Miami where he claimed several notable scalps.

Defeat at the same stage against compatriot Novak Djokovic in Belgrade last week was no disgrace for a player who is ranked a career-high 38th in the world. He will not meet either Zverev or Ruud until the semi-final stage at the earliest, by which point he should have a decent chance to claim a second career title.

There is also televised action from Portugal this week, where Felix Auger-Aliassime is the top seed in a high-quality Estoril Open for which no prices were available on Sunday.

Auger-Aliassime, finally a winner on an indoor hard-court in Rotterdam in February, could meet two-time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem in round three but the Austrian is still working his way back from a series of wrist problems.
