Thursday's betting preview

The second round in Montreal saw some heavy hitters fall by the wayside as defending champion Daniil Medvedev and second and third seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas were all sent packing.

Nick Kyrgios defeated Medvedev to tee up an all-Australian last-16 clash with Alex De Minaur and the Wimbledon runner-up is now favourite to claim back-to-back titles following his recent heroics in Washington.

With everything seemingly starting to click, Kyrgios looks tough to oppose having lost only one of his last 16 matches, while it is also a defining day for the British men with Dan Evans, Cameron Norrie and Jack Draper all in third-round action.

And there could be some value in taking on the youngest of the trio, 20-year-old Draper, who stunned Greek world number five Tsitsipas 7-5 7-6 in the last round.

The world number 82 takes on Gael Monfils, who has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons but remains one of the most naturally gifted players on tour.

The Frenchman showed how dangerous he can be when making the Australian Open quarter-final earlier this season and should have little trouble nullifying Draper’s big serve having battled past giant American Maxime Cressy 7-6 7-6 last time out.

Evans looks up against it in his clash with Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz while Norrie is bidding to follow up his Los Cabos Open semi-final win over home hope Felix Auger-Aliassime.

World number one Iga Swiatek remains the red-hot favourite in the women’s event, but the pick of the bets from Thursday’s last-16 encounters in Toronto is Karolina Pliskova to overcome Maria Sakkari.

Pliskova was utterly dominant as she thrashed Amanda Anisimova 6-1 6-1 last time out, and having struggled with her serve recently, the Czech star looked back to her best as she saved the only two break points she faced.

Fourth seed Sakkari is a class act but needed three sets to see off Sloane Stephens in the last round and prior to that had been beaten 6-1 6-3 by Shelby Rogers in San Jose.
