Day one preview

There are some mouth-watering first-round clashes in store in both Montreal and Toronto on Monday and it looks a tough starting point for British number one Emma Raducanu as she faces the defending champion Camila Giorgi.

Raducanu is starting to find some consistency but there is little in her recent form to suggest she should be favourite against a player who may have had this tournament on her mind for some time.

Raducanu made the quarter-final in Washington last time out but was brushed aside 7-6 6-1 by Liudmila Samsonova and may also find things too difficult against Giorgi, who beat Elise Mertens, Cori Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Pliskova to win her maiden WTA 1000 title last year.

The best first-round bet from the men’s action in Montreal is Alex de Minaur to get the better of home favourite Denis Shapovalov, who is seriously out of form.

Shapovalov has lost eight of his last nine matches and there was little encouragement to take from his first-round exit to Jeffrey John Wolff in Washington last time out.

This is considerably tougher against De Minaur, who claimed silverware in Atlanta at the end of July and has won his last two clashes with the Canadian.
