Tournament preview

Daniil Medvedev can return to the world number-one spot if he reaches the semi-finals of the ATP Miami Open and he will be looking to capitalise on the absences of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in Florida.

The biggest name in the draw, the Russian is outright favourite at 11-4 to win in Miami but has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the event and has not been dealt the easiest of draws.

He could find himself up against wildcard Andy Murray in his first match in the second round and it is also worth noting that Medvedev is yet to win a title in 2022.

Since defeat to Nadal in the final of the Australian Open, he has been knocked out in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open and lost to Gael Monfils in only his second match at the recent Indian Wells Masters.

Medvedev is strong on hard courts but something is not clicking right now and, as Hubert Hurkacz's triumph in this event in 2021 showed, it could pay to back someone further down in the betting.

Alex Zverev is second-favourite at around 6-1 and was the only player on the ATP Tour to win multiple Masters titles last year, coming out on top in Madrid and Cincinnati.

He also triumphed at the Miami Open in 2018 but has failed to win a match in either of the last two editions of the event in 2019 and 2021 and could also be worth swerving.

Instead, the value may lay with teenager Carlos Alcaraz at 13-2 with bet365. Only 18, the promising Spaniard already has two ATP titles under his belt, including one this year - the Rio Open in February.

Both of his titles have come on clay but he showed promise on hard courts in the Indian Wells Masters last week, making the semi-finals without dropping a set before a 4-6 6-4 3-6 defeat to legendary compatriot Nadal.

The 14th seed has a fairly soft draw in Miami too with a first major challenge not arising until potentially the fourth round, when he could face Stefanos Tsitsipas, but Alcaraz should fancy his chances of being competitive against the out-of-form Greek player.

Tsitsipas is yet to win an ATP tournament this year, having lost in the final of the ATP Rotterdam in February.
