Tournament previews

Although the season's final Grand Slam tournament - the US Open - is in the rearview mirror, there is more action on the hardcourts this week with the ATP Metz and ATP San Diego both getting underway on Monday.

In the ATP Metz, otherwise known as the Moselle Open, Daniil Medvedev is the standout name and is top seed at the event.

The Russian is looking to bounce back after defeat to Nick Kyrgios in the last 16 of the US Open earlier this month.

That loss meant Medvedev lost the world number one spot and he will be eager to make amends in Metz.

But he could face some stiff competition in the ATP 250 event, most notably from defending champion Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in the final of last year's tournament.

Metz second seed Hurkacz will have been frustrated to exit the US Open in the second round but he has had plenty of time to prepare for this event and only last month impressed with a run to the final of the ATP Montreal, in which he saw off the likes of Kyrgios and Casper Ruud.

Hurkacz looks a decent outright selection in France.

Norwegian Ruud won the inaugural edition of the ATP San Diego last year but will not be back to defend his title at the ATP 250 event as he prepares for the Laver Cup, which starts later in the week and will be Roger Federer's final ever professional tournament.

Instead, with Ruud not featuring, Great Britain's Dan Evans is the tournament's top seed and he can justify that label.

Along with Jenson Brooksby, Marcos Giron and Pedro Martinez, Evans is one of four players to be given byes to the second round of the ATP San Diego and he looks a value winner pick at 4-1.

Evans failed to make an impact at Wimbledon in the summer but admitted he does not like the pressure of playing at the grass-court tournament and has looked much better since transitioning to the USA hardcourts.

Evans made the last four of the ATP Montreal and put in a decent performance against Marin Cilic before exiting the US Open at the third-round stage and is worth a bet.
