ATP Madrid Open predictions

Having made back-to-back clay-court finals in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, home favourite Carlos Alcaraz heads the betting in his pursuit of a third Madrid Open title, and the second seed could be tough to topple as his French Open preparations go up another gear.

Alcaraz claimed silverware in the Spanish capital in 2022 and 2023 while last season he went down to eventual champion Andrey Rublev in a three-set quarter-final in his pursuit of a hat-trick.

The Spanish superstar defeated Lorenzo Musetti to land his sixth Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo earlier this month and then found only Holger Rune too good as he finished runner-up despite another quick turnaround in Barcelona.

That makes him a worthy favourite in Madrid but he has had a busy recent schedule and Novak Djokovic, a three-time champion himself, is a hurdle he may have to overcome in the bottom half of the draw.

There may be better value to be had in the top half of the draw, where Alexander Zverev tops the seedings and is a leading contender following his return to form on home soil in Munich last week.

That title success was Zverev’s first piece of noteworthy form since finishing runner-up to the suspended Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open in January and he could be a danger to all with his confidence restored.

The world number two won this tournament in 2018 and 2021, while finishing runner-up to Alcaraz in his title defence in 2022, and he showed his clay-court prowess when reaching the final of last season’s French Open.

The early draw could have been kinder as he may have to face Spanish opponents in his opening two assignments and Francisco Cerundolo, a semi-finalist in Munich, would pose a threat in the last 16.

However, belief is key to Zverev performing at his peak and, providing he is in the same vein as last week’s win in Germany, then he should have a big say on proceedings.

It would be dangerous to underestimate Rune, who is also in the top half, following his 7-6 6-2 victory over Alcaraz in the Barcelona title-decider and the two-time French Open quarter-finalist finally appears to be coming of age.

The 21-year-old Danish talent dropped only one set on his way to glory last week and another deep run could be on the cards given Daniil Medvedev’s vulnerability on this slower surface.
