Tournament previews

Although the dust has settled on Wimbledon, there is time for one more grass-court event on the ATP Tour this week as the Hall of Fame Open starts in Newport, Rhode Island.

The ATP 250 event is the only men's grass-court tournament to take place after Wimbledon and the 2021 edition was won by veteran South African Kevin Anderson, who beat the USA's Jenson Brooksby in the final.

Anderson has since retired so will not defend his title and it looks a pretty open field this year as Felix Auger-Aliassime is favourite at 7-2 with four-time winner John Isner 11-2 and wildcard entry Andy Murray 6-1.

This tournament has historically been dominated by Americans but this year it could pay to back one of the less heralded European players, unseeded Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven.

Van Rijthoven has enjoyed a great grass-court campaign, winning the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships title prior to Wimbledon. He made the fourth round at SW19, where he was predictably beaten by Novak Djokovic but only after taking a set off the Serbian superstar, and he looks a decent each-way selection.

There is also a clay-court event taking place this week in the form of the Swedish Open and Casper Ruud is the headline act in a field featuring Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman and Holger Rune.

Although an obvious favourite, Ruud still merits a bet at 13-8. The Norwegian is pretty reliable on Scandinavian soil, having won this event in 2021, and he has taken his clay-court game to yet another level this season.

Ruud made his first Grand Slam final at the French Open in June, losing to 'King of Clay' Rafael Nadal, having claimed the Geneva Open title the month before.

The 23-year-old will be keen for a confidence boost following his second-round exit at Wimbledon and he can get exactly that on his preferred surface.
