Tournament previews

Next week’s Paris Masters, which is the eighth and final ATP 1000 event of the campaign, may be the priority but that hasn’t stopped the stars from coming out in force for this week’s tournaments in Basel and Vienna.

Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and defending Vienna Open champion Alexander Zverev are the only three players from inside the world’s top 20 not in action this week.

Down the years the Swiss Indoors in Basel has been the domain of retired legend Roger Federer, who won his homeland title for a tenth time in 2019.

That was the last time the indoor hard-court event took place and while the home faithful may wish to have seen Federer one last time, there is still plenty of quality in the line-up.

World number one and US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz is the 7-2 favourite but he was laboured on his return to action in Astana earlier this month, losing in the opening round to David Goffin.

Another three-week layoff may have helped Alcaraz’s cause but there are bigger fish to fry in the coming weeks - the Paris Masters is followed by the ATP Tour World Finals - and his draw isn't straightforward.

With Felix-Auger Aliassime and Pablo Carreno Busta drawn alongside the Spaniard in the top half, the bottom half of the draw could be easier to pick holes in.

Holger Rune defeated 2019 runner-up Alex de Minaur in Stockholm Open semi-finals last week and the pair meet again in the opening round in Basel, while second seed Casper Ruud has plenty to prove after early exits in Korea and Japan.

The quick turnaround of Rune and De Minaur may leave the door open for fourth seed Marin Cilic, who has looked back to somewhere near his best this season and arrives in Switzerland fresh.

Cilic, like top seed Alcaraz, went out early in the Astana Open at the beginning of this month. However, he was runner-up to Djokovic in Tel Aviv before that and took eventual champion Alcaraz to five sets at the US Open in September.

Cilic should exploit a decent early draw in Basel and British number one Cameron Norrie could do likewise in Vienna, where top seed Daniil Medvedev may be a vulnerable favourite.

The field in Austria is much deeper than the one in Basel but Norrie has a gilt-edged opportunity to at least reach the quarter-final stage, where Andrey Rublev or Diego Schwartman could be waiting.

Four title successes in just over 15 months shows the Brit now knows how to get the job done and there are reasons to take on Medvedev, whose only piece of silverware this year came in Los Cabos in August.

Norrie may have to beat Medvedev or Jannik Sinner in order to make the final but quotes of 16-1 are attractive.
