Sunday's betting preview

The 2006 Commonwealth Games provided Mark Cavendish with one of the first successes of his glittering career when the Manx Missile claimed gold on the track in Melbourne.

Fast forward 16 years and Cavendish is targeting road-race gold at Birmingham 2022. Bookmakers have chalked up the 37-year-old up as 9-5 favourite.

In theory, the 160km route, which comprises ten laps of a slightly rolling route around Warwick, gives Cav an excellent chance, but the disparity in the strength of different nations when compared to WorldTour level races can make for chaotic racing. Multiple attacks are likely, especially from the stronger teams who will want to minimise any chance of a bunch finish.

Team England had to settle for silver in both time-trials in midweek but Fred Wright looks to have an excellent chance of upgrading that to gold in the road race.

Wright had an exceptional Tour de France, claiming four top-ten finishes including second place on stage 13. He was a feature in breakaways throughout the race, always a great indicator of a rider’s current form, but is tactically versatile as advertised by his tenth place in the sprint on the Champs-Elysees.

England’s time-trial silver medalist Anna Henderson will be hoping she can also go one better in the women’s road race, although she may once again have to play second fiddle to Australian Grace Brown.

Brown, who took gold in the time-trial, finished second overall and won a stage of June’s Women’s Tour c. The 30-year-old can count on a strong Aussie squad to aid her challenge for double Commonwealth gold.

England missed out on a place in Sunday’s final of the women's T20 cricket event at Edgbaston (5pm) after they were beaten by India on Saturday.

The Indians, who were 12-5 to beat the tournament hosts, will play either Australia or New Zealand, who meet in the second semi-final, for gold. England will play for bronze at 10am on Sunday.
