The low-key Barbasol Championship in Kentucky runs alongside the Open Championship this week. In-form Irishman, Seamus Power, and former Masters champ, Charl Schwartzel, are jostling for favouritism.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Taylor Pendrith 30-1

Power-packed Canadian Taylor Pendrith can threaten his maiden PGA Tour title this week. This enormous driver should relish the soft, wide fairways of Keene Trace, which has yielded winning scores of 23 and 26 under par in the last two editions.

Pendrith is a four-time Korn Ferry Tour runner-up, who had another near-miss last week, finishing a shot shy of a playoff. He has won twice on the Canadian Tour.

Next best bet

Davis Riley 40-1

Another Korn Ferry Tour star who can take advantage of this PGA Tour opportunity is Davis Riley, who won twice in the lower grade last year. Riley is from this region - born in Mississippi, went to college in Alabama - and he will feel comfortable in Kentucky.

Riley is an attacking player who should fall in love with the soft, straightforward set-up.

Other selections

Will Gordon 80-1

Davis Thompson 70-1

Will Gordon was an impressive amateur who quickly showed he could handle the PGA Tour, finishing third in the Travelers Championship last season. This year has not gone as well, but 14th place in the Palmetto Championship a month ago was encouraging and four rounds in the 60s for 28th spot in the John Deere Classic last week was another decent effort.

Complete a four-pronged attack with former college star Davis Thompson, who was the early pacesetter in the Rocket Mortgage Classic last time out. Thompson has just turned pro, is bristling with potential and may be good enough to claim an early PGA Tour success.

Course overview The first three Barbasols were staged in Alabama at the Grand National Course, Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, but Keene Trace took over in 2018, hosting for the third time this week, the 2020 edition having been cancelled. The layout has wide fairways, large greens and is easy for professionals, with winning scores of 23 and 26 under par in the Barbasol. The eighth, ninth, 17th and 18th holes are played around a large lake, so there is scope for drama at the end of each nine.

Story of 2019 Jim Herman edged Kelly Kraft by a shot

Weather forecast Thunderstorms are forecast before and during the event, with hardly any breeze

Type of player suited to the challenge A hot flat-stick seems essential at such a low-scoring course, especially with rain set to soften the track and make life even easier for the players.

Key attribute Touch
