Famously, a week is a long time in politics and the pressure on Sir Keir Starmer continues to intensify following Labour's heavy losses in last Thursday's local elections.

The fallout from last week's vote, in which Labour conceded swathes of seats to Reform and the Greens, saw bookmakers go 1-4 that Starmer will leave Downing Street this year, and the resignation of health secretary Wes Streeting today has only added to the PM's problems.

Streeting, who is widely reported to have leadership ambitions of his own, pulled no punches in his resignation letter, saying that he had "lost confidence" in Starmer's leadership and that it was clear the PM would not lead Labour into the next general election.

Streeting is a 9-1 chance to succeed Starmer in a market headed by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Burnham, who was blocked by Labour's National Executive Committee, which included Starmer, to stand in this year's by-election in Gorton and Denton, is evens to be the next prime minister and has said that he intends to try to run for a return to Westminster after Labour MP Josh Simons announced he would stand down in the constituency of Makerfield.

Simons said: "Today, I am putting the people I represent and the country I love first and will be resigning as MP for Makerfield.

"I am standing aside so that Andy Burnham can return to his home."

In a statement, Burnham said that he had lived in the area for 25 years and that the constituents in Makerfield "have been let down by national politics".

Burnham is followed in the betting to replace Starmer by former deputy PM Angela Rayner, who is a best-priced 5-1 chance with Hills to become the United Kingdom's fourth female premier.
