A general election in 2018 was a 6-1 shot on Sunday afternoon but it is was no bigger than 7-4 on Monday evening after a dramatic day in politics.

David Davis, secretary of state for exiting the European Union, resigned shortly before midnight on Sunday and more turmoil was to come for the government on Monday when foreign secretary Boris Johnson also quit.

The turmoil follows the disagreement on PM Theresa May's approach to the Brexit negotiations, and prices as short as 11-8 for a general election to be required in the next six months were on offer as rumours of a leadership challenge grew.

Johnson is priced between 4-1 and 9-1 to be the next leader of the Conservatives - Sajid Javid and Michael Gove are the market leaders.

Sky Bet go a top-priced 10-11 that the prime minister loses her job this year - it is possible for the title to change hands without a general election taking place.

Jeremy Hunt is 15-8 favourite to succeed Johnson as foreign secretary with Gove a 9-4 chance.

It's 5-2 with Sky Bet that a second EU referendum is held as pressure mounts on the government for the public to have their say on any deal. Betfair have cut the price on no Brexit deal being reached before April 1, 2019 from 2-1 to evens.
