The betting suggests the Conservatives will win December's general election but a majority is hanging in the balance.

It's no better than 1-6 that the Conservatives pick up the most seats but prime minister Boris Johnson is hoping the vote enables him a fresh mandate to push through his Brexit deal.

A Conservative majority is a 10-11 shot with a hung parliament odds-on in places and a top price 11-10.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called the December 12 showdown a "once-in-a-generation" chance to change the country but his party are 13-2 to win the most seats and 18-1 to land a majority verdict at the polls.

The potential for a cold polling day and possible weather issues for the first December election in just under 100 years may well lead to turnout concerns.

Betfred's favourite is between 60 and 65 per cent at 11-4, slightly down on the last three elections which have produced 68.7, 66.1 and 65.1 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats, who have a clear anti-Brexit policy and were keener than most to go to the polls, are confident of making inroads under new leader Jo Swinson.

They are 8-11 to secure over 40.5 seats with Betfred, while the Lib Dems are 4-6 to take between 10-20 per cent of the overall vote share and 20-1 to win most seats.

Nicola Sturgeon will also see this as a perfect opportunity to increase the number of Scottish National Party MPs, up from 35. The SNP are 4-5 to win over 50.5 seats at the election.
