Eurovision Song Contest first semi-final prediction

Sweden are favourites to achieve a record-breaking eighth victory in the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel on Saturday night and their quirky number also dominates the betting for Tuesday's first semi-final.

Coverage of the semis was promoted to BBC One when Liverpool hosted on Ukraine's behalf in 2023 and the show's popularity has helped it retain its slot on the premier channel.

The winner of the semi-finals is not revealed until after the final, but it shouldn't be the biggest betting heat this year and the Swedes are best-priced at 2-11 to top the vote for their semi-final with their jaunty sauna-themed number.

The top ten acts from each semi-final - there are 15 contenders on Tuesday and 16 on Thursday - will progress to join the big five nations and hosts Switzerland in Saturday's final.

Two-thirds of the field are set to go through and the betting battles centre around the fringe qualification candidates with nine contenders priced at 1-3 or shorter to qualify.

San Marino have not made the cut for the final since 2021 but could have an opportunity this year with Gabry Ponte's bouncy dance track Tutta l'Italia. The DJ was part of Eiffel 65, who had a monster hit in 1999 with Blue (Da Ba Dee).

The song was originally written as the theme tune for Italy's Sanremo music festival but proved so popular it was selected to represent San Marino. It should certainly get a big vote from Italy and might be popular enough in other countries to get into the final.

It's certainly more cheerful than its chief qualification rival Slovenia, whose song is about singer Klemen's wife's cancer treatment, and it has a much better draw, performing 11th while Slovenia will be third on stage.

Sweden are evens favourites to win the main prize on Saturday while Austria are their main market rivals at 11-4 followed by France 12-1. Ireland's Emmy will perform in Thursday's second semi-final and is 10-11 to qualify for the final.

UK act Remember Monday are just outside the top ten in the overall betting at 80-1.
