Quarter-final preview

Ronnie O'Sullivan is into the quarter-finals of the UK Championship as he targets an incredible eighth York crown.

It may be a little strong to say that the Rocket has faced criticism in recent months, but there have certainly been suggestions that the six-time World Champion's powers may be on the wane.

O'Sullivan hasn't won a title since lifting the 2020 Crucible crown and he was beaten in five ranking event finals last season. However, we have seen many times before that the Rocket is an even more formidable force when motivation is high and he is backed into a corner.

The Rocket holds all sorts of records and accolades and he won the 2013 World Championship having not played a competitive match for the entire season. Of course, that has little relevance when he takes on Kyren Wilson on Friday, but it does indicate the Rocket is at his best when fired up.

There has been a indication that O'Sullivan feels he has a point to prove in recent interviews and that could spell bad news for the Warrior.

The Chigwell cueman has seen off dogged opponents Robbie Williams and Mark King, as well as the break-building talents of Michael White and Noppon Saengkham to reach the last eight, and he should be sharp against Wilson.

The Warrior has enjoyed a fairly comfortable route to the quarter-finals - world number 44 Ben Woollaston is the highest-ranked player he has tackled in York.

Clearly, this is a major step up for the Kettering potter and he may find the motivated Rocket a tough opponent.
