Tournament preview

The sharp-shooting Snooker Shoot Out always delivers plenty of thrills and spills and that's not just pints in the crowd. Ryan Day is 50-1 to become the first potter to successfully defend the one-frame crown, while four-time world champion Mark Selby is the 22-1 market leader.

Clearly, it's an open event, but that doesn't mean there isn't value to be had.

Top operators Judd Trump, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson and John Higgins have decided to sit out this event and that could give an opportunity to a cueman who has been banging on the door.

Jack Lisowski has made six ranking event finals in his career and the Gloucester potter is a gifted performer.

Jackpot has been playing better than his results this season suggest and he has the rhythm and pace suited to this event. Lisowski is inside the top-five potters on average shot times this season and he has the speed of cue and mind to have a good run in Leicester.

Jimmy Robertson had an excellent start to the season when making the semi-finals of the British Open and he backed that up by reaching the quarter-final of the World Grand Prix last month. Things were quiet in between, but as a whole it has been a promising campaign for J-Rob. The Bexhill-on-Sea potter has the break-building talents and fluency to go well in this event and he can be supported at 50-1.

Another Sussex potter who could be worth a punt is Mark Davis. The Hastings battler is in the latter stages of his career, but he is still a capable performer on his day and he has been in decent nick this season.

Dark Mavis pushed Neil Robertson to a deciding frame in the English Open and also played with credit in the short-format Championship League. Davis, a two-time winner of the novelty Six Reds World Championship, can upset Stuart Bingham in round one and outrun odds of 100-1.

Finally, Martin O'Donnell has made a semi-final and quarter-final in five appearances in the Shoot Out and he could be set for another big effort. Mod is a far better player than his ranking suggests and the Londoner was good enough to reach the quarter-finals of the UK Championship a few seasons ago.

Betfred, BoyleSports and Hills are offering each-way terms of a quarter the odds the first four on this 128-runner event, while bet365, Betfair, Coral, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power go a half the first two.
