Tournament preview

Mark Allen was crowned Masters champion at Alexandra Palace in 2018 and the Antrim ace looks good value to reign in this year's German Masters.

The Tempodrom has developed into one of the best venues on the snooker tour and the lively Berlin crowd certainly spice up this event.

Defending champion Judd Trump heads the market and his chances have been boosted after the Bristol potter was handed a first-round bye. However, the Ace hasn't made it past the quarter-final in any ranking event this season and top potter Neil Robertson is also housed in Trump's half of the draw.

The bottom section looks the place to be and Allen rates a good each-way punt. The Pistol has been playing far better than his recent results suggest and another deep run shouldn't be too far away.

The Antrim cueman has already won the Northern Ireland Open this season and he looked in that sort of touch when going down 6-5 against Trump in the first-round of the Masters earlier this month.

Allen has sorted out his off-the-table issues and he should come through against Lyu Haotian in the opening round on it. There is potential for a second-round clash with Shaun Murphy, but the Magician hasn't been in great nick and the section looks pretty soft.

The fourth quarter may have some betting interest too. Mark Selby is the big-hitter but the Jester makes little appeal at 5-4. Ryan Day has had a quiet season but has been handed a decent chance by the draw and he could be worth a punt to win the quarter.

The Welshman takes on Noppon Saengkham in the first round and a clash against Ken Doherty or Sam Craigie would come next for Dynamite. A tougher quarter-final contest is likely but the Pontycymer potter has the game to mix it with the best on his day.
