Experience could count for Matthew Stevens in all-Welsh battle

Wells playing well but Welsh Dragon is roaring more this season

Starts 7pm Thursday

Daniel Wells has made the most of the first-round bye he received when Ronnie O'Sullivan withdrew from the Scottish Open, but while the Welshman is making noticeable improvement right now he may do well to deny seasoned compatriot Matthew Stevens in round four in Glasgow.

Stevens is looking more like his old self this season and it should not be forgotten that he's a heavyweight performer at his best.

Wins over Li Yuan, Elliot Slessor and Jimmy Robertson suggest Stevens is not far from his best, but he will have to be on top of his game because Wells absolutely ploughed through David Gilbert and Mark Joyce in 4-1 victories.

Stevens is edging favouritism, probably purely on what he has achieved. But although Wells could be a dangerous opponent, if the match proves to be close the favourite's experience could come in handy.

The oddsmakers think Kyren Wilson could have Shaun Murphy's measure but there are signs that the Magician, who compiled a break of 141 in a 4-2 triumph over Nigel Bond, is getting his act together so favourite backers should punt with care.

Recommendation
M Stevens to beat D Wells
