Preview

Judd Trump v Kyren Wilson
10am

Judd Trump has done well to survive testing Betfred World Championship encounters against Tom Ford and Yan Bingtao, but things are likely to get tougher again for the world number one in a quarter-final clash with Kyren Wilson.

Considering the pressure defending champion Trump is under, he has done pretty well to progress to the last eight. Bingtao, in particular, never gave up hope of winning their second-round clash and there were times when it looked as if the Chinese 20-year-old may be good enough to triumph.

After a slow start, Trump steeled himself well in the second session to turn the match on its head, after which he never lost the lead.

But the burden of trying to become the first maiden champion to successfully retain the crown is only likely to grow as the tournament goes on, and the Bristolian somehow needs to find greater focus on the job in hand.

That may be easier said than done and Wilson, a Crucible semi-finalist in 2018, has gone to Sheffield looking as sharp as he been all season.

Trump, who dominates many opponents, may find it tougher to boss the baize against Wilson. Going over the frames can be considered but backing the outsider with a handicap start is preferred.

Mark Selby v Neil Robertson
10am

Former Crucible kings Neil Robertson and Mark Selby have had some titanic battles down the years and, in a nutshell, Selby had the upper hand over the Australian in their early series but Robbo then controlled things when the Jester fell from the pinnacle of the sport.

Selby is bidding to return to the top and the Leicester cueman, winner of two of the four Home Nations tournaments in the 2019-20 season, has looked solid in Sheffield.

But while the seventh seed may be on the up, Robertson deserves huge credit for the way he won the final session of his 13-9 victory over Barry Hawkins in round two.

The Hawk may not have been at his absolute peak given that he is getting used to playing with a new cue. But the Londoner was still a threat and Robbo did well to keep his composure on the run to the finishing line.

It could be close against Selby, so backing over 21.5 frames to be contested looks prudent.
