All eyes are on China as Xiao Guodong defends the Wuhan Open title he won when defeating Si Jiahui in last year’s all-Chinese final.

Guodong is a 16-1 chance to retain his Wuhan crown, but what is more interesting than the Chinese potter's chances of winning again, is the fact that the 36-year-old is the top seed in the 64-player event and how that has shaped the draw.

Wuhan Open preview

Judd Trump, Zhao Xintong, Kyren Wilson and Mark Selby account for just shy of 70 per cent of the Wuhan Open outright market but none of those top players are housed in the top quarter of the draw.

Guodong, Barry Hawkins and Ding Junhui are the shortest-priced cuemen in a weak first section, but they could all be eclipsed by Elliot Slessor, who looks overpriced at 50-1.

The Gateshead potter went all the way to the last four of the big-money Saudi Arabia Masters last week and that marked the fifth ranking-event semi-final of the 31-year-old’s career.

Slessor downed John Higgins, Stuart Bingham and Mark Williams on the way to a large pay day, before he was beaten by eventual champion Neil Robertson.

The north-east cueman has seen his ranking jump from 60th to 29th over the last three seasons, and with money on the board this term, the progressive 31-year-old is set to climb further up the ladder.

Slessor can navigate a path to the final

According to the outright prices, the worst possible route Slessor could face on his way to the semi-finals in Wuhan is David Grace, Guodong, Marco Fu and Barry Hawkins and the 31-year-old would be favourite in two of those potential matches and would have a decent chance against the Hawk or Guodong.

The path looks kind for an in-form player to produce another big run and, at 50-1, Slessor looks worthy of each-way support.

It’s tricky to find any other bets on the outright market, which is being bet to a big margin and the firms have tightened it further following Robertson’s withdrawal.
