Mark Williams can land knockout blow on Carter

Ali Carter put up a strong fight to see off Ronnie O'Sullivan in the Betfred World Championship second round but Mark Williams can land a knockout blow on the Captain when they clash in the quarter-finals.

Carter showed tremendous fighting spirit and always kept the Rocket at arm's length but apart from an impressive run of 115 the Essex cueman's highest break was a knock of 72. It has to be a concern that such an intense effort will leave its mark on Carter and Williams could take advantage.

Williams has enjoyed a fantastic season and has looked close to his best.

The Welshman made four tons in his 10-5 first-round win over Jimmy Robertson and 13-7 victory against Robert Milkins, and while other players have recorded wider winning margins, Williams has always looked in complete control.

Williams is being asked to give Carter a 2.5-frame start in this best-of-25-frame contest and at evens that looks worth punting.
