Daniel Wells could make life difficult for fellow Welshman

Ryan Day may do well to stay with unheralded ace

Quarter-finals
Eurosport 1, from midday Friday

It's not a major surprise to see Daniel Wells making his first big tournament run on the main tour, but it has been an eye-opener to see it suddenly click into place in the Scottish Open.

The potential has always been there for Welsh cueman Wells, but the way he has seen off David Gilbert (4-1), Mark Joyce (4-1) and Matthew Stevens (4-0) has been a revelation.

It's best of nine frames in Friday's quarter-finals and Wells, who takes on Ryan Day for a place in the last four, looks worth a bet with a start of 2.5 frames on the handicap against his compatriot.

Day, of course, knows what to do in order to cross the line in tournaments. He struggled to achieve that for many years, but in recent seasons things have fallen into place for him, although major titles still elude him.

The Scottish Open, the last of the four Home Nations series, is well within his compass. But Wells, who was a 1,000-1 chance before the tournament started, is performing so positively that Day may do well to stay with him.

Recommendation
D Wells +2.5 frames
