Day two preview

There has been support for Joe Perry to start the Coral World Grand Prix with a lunchtime victory over Ali Carter, but that comes as a slight surprise for a few reasons.

First, once Carter had edged past Martin O'Donnell in his Cheltenham opener last year he played some blinding snooker to reach the final.

Second, Carter goes to the Centaur venue at Prestbury Park still feeling good about his game after finding only Stuart Bingham too good in the Masters last month.

And third, Perry, pipped 5-4 by Tian Pengfei in round one of the European Masters in Austria, then scored just 69 points in being thumped 5-0 by Luca Brecel in the German Masters in Berlin.

Carter, who holds a slight lead in the pair's personal series, has won their last four clashes, although all came in the Championship League.

Perry's last victory over the Captain came in this competition four years ago in Llandudno. The Gentleman remains pretty solid on the baize, but Carter, who is five years his opponent's junior, is the more progressive performer.

Matthew Stevens was pipped 4-3 by Kyren Wilson in Cheltenham last year and the Welshman, who has been producing some reasonably promising performances this season, could give Shaun Murphy a decent test in the evening session and over 5.5 frames looks the best bet for those getting involved.
