Preview

The qualifying phase of the Betfred World Championship starts on Tuesday and while some Chinese players have declined the opportunity to compete due to concerns over the pandemic, there are still some fine talents involved.

Si Jiahui entered many notebooks with a number of promising performances before the lockdown and the 18-year-old may have enough to silence Ross Muir at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Si defeated Stuart Bingham 4-1 on the way to reaching the last 16 of last year’s World Open and further improvement is expected from the Shaoxing teenager, who also looks worth a bet to reach the Crucible.

Muir is not easily opposed because the Scot is potentially a much better player than he often receives credit for.

But while Muir, 24, still has time to make his mark on the main tour – and seeing the success that compatriot Scott Donaldson has enjoyed in recent seasons could serve as a boost for the Edinburgh native – he may struggle to keep tabs on his attack-minded opponent over the best of 11 frames.

Wu Yize looks another player who punters should keep on their side and it’s no surprise to see he has been nibbled at for his clash with Ashley Hugill.

York native Hugill, 25, was a deserving winner of the WSF Open earlier this year, when he beat useful Ukrainian Iulian Boiko 5-3 in the final.

But Wu, who possesses an unorthodox but highly effective cue action, could go on to bigger things in his career and the 16-year-old looks the bet with a handicap start of 2.5 frames.

Crucible legend Jimmy White should have few problems in his opening outing against little-known Ivan Kakovsky.
