Roma, a black-and-white, subtitled Mexican movie you probably won’t have seen unless you’re a Netflix subscriber, is warm favourite for the Best Picture Oscar after the Academy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday.

The director of Roma, Alfonso Cuaron, is priced between 1-5 and 1-14 to grab his second gong after winning for Gravity in 2014.

Lady Gaga and Freddie Mercury fans hoping A Star Is Born or Bohemian Rhapsody were headed for top honours - the Queen film won the Golden Globe for Best Drama - could be in for disappointment at Hollywood’s red-carpet night on February 24.

Roma and British historical film The Favourite have ten nominations apiece, with A Star Is Born and Vice close behind with eight.

Olivia Colman nominated for Best Actress

All three main actresses from The Favourite are nominated. Olivia Colman’s mad, ailing and foul-mouthed Queen Anne is second to Glenn Close (The Wife) in the Best Actress betting, with Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone both up for Best Supporting Actress.

Roma, the first Netflix production to be Oscar-nominated, has been available to watch on TV since December but been given only a limited cinema release.

Black Panther is the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture, as well as featuring in six other categories.

Bohemian Rhapsody is 16-1 to repeat its Golden Globes glory, but Rami Malek’s thrilling Mercury impersonation makes him co-favourite for Best Actor with Christian Bale, unrecognisable as George W Bush’s number two Dick Cheney in Vice.

Mahershala Ali, winner two years ago for Moonlight and put up again for Green Book, and Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) are odds-on for Best Supporting Actor and Actress.

Not all the contenders have reached these shores yet, but it might be sixth time lucky for Amy Adams as Mrs Cheney in Vice, which opens in the UK this week.
