Sevilla should secure their semi-final spot
First-leg deficit leaves shot-shy Atletico Madrid in deep trouble
Copa del Rey quarter-final, second leg
Vincenzo Montella’s men came from behind with two late goals to secure a 2-1 win in the first leg at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.
It was yet another example of Atletico failing to build on a one-goal lead. They did it twice to their cost against Chelsea in the Champions League and also at home to Girona on Saturday, a match which finished 1-1 after Antoine Griezmann had fired the hosts in front.
This lack of goals is a constant source of concern for Atletico and it won’t help that Diego Costa – the man who opened the scoring in the first leg – has been ruled out of the second leg through injury.
While Atletico were dropping precious points against Girona, Sevilla were easing to a routine 3-0 win at Espanyol thanks to their best performance under Montella, whose appointment was far from overwhelmingly popular among supporters.
These are the two lowest-scoring sides in the top nine in La Liga so, with a lead to protect, Sevilla should prove hard to break down.
And if Atletico have to take risks as the game wears on – and away goals count after 90 minutes so Sevilla are in a seriously strong position – Montella’s men could well get opportunities on the break. Back the hosts draw no bet.
