Schwartzel to outclass veteran playing partners
South African over recent wrist problem
Sky Sports 4, 9pm Thursday
Charl Schwartzel withdrew during round three of the AT&T Byron Nelson last month with a wrist injury, but it was nothing some icing and physio could not cure, and the South African has reported himself fully fit for the golfing summer.
A healthy Schwartzel should destroy his playing partners in round one of the St Jude Classic, making an investment on the former Masters champion of great appeal at a shade of odds-on. Veteran swingers Ernie Els and Davis Love provide the opposition in the 1.50pm (UK and Ireland time) group.
Schwartzel returned to competition with 35th place in the Memorial last week, a decent finish which came despite him making three double-bogeys at par-threes. His long-game is in order and TPC Southwind sets up well for his tee-to-green strength.
Els has posted one top-ten finish on the US Tour since September, 2014, and has slumped to world number 388th. Love has not bettered 33rd place in a full-field event since his shock Wyndham Championship victory in August, 2015.
Schwartzel, who was sixth in the Valspar Championship in March, finished third in the Masters in April and should outclass his ageing playing partners if producing anything close to his best.
Punters looking for a bigger price should consider Chez Reavie to beat Sung Kang and Ryan Blaum in the 6.20pm meeting. Reavie is an accurate driver who is well suited to Southwind, where he finished 12th on his last visit (2015).
Kang carded a miserable 83 in the Memorial on Sunday to finish second from last of the weekend qualifiers, and St Jude form figures of 73-MC-MC do not suggest an immediate recovery will occur.
Blaum has never recorded a top-ten finish on the US Tour.
