Borussia Dortmund v Schalke

Borussia Dortmund almost took all three points from their midweek clash with Manchester City before late goals from John Stones and Erling Haaland saw the German side leave empty handed.

They face a very different challenge as they host Schalke in the Ruhr derby back in the Bundesliga. Their promoted rivals have had a decent start to the new campaign, losing just two of their opening six matches.

They have, however, won just one of those games and BVB should have too much quality going forward for them.

The hosts can sometimes be sloppy in the match after a Champions League tie, as evidenced by their 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig last weekend.

Schalke have scored in all but one of their six games this season and are fancied to find the net again in this derby clash, although Dortmund look likely to prevail.

Bayer Leverkusen v Werder Bremen

Bayer Leverkusen have endured their worst beginning to a domestic season in 40 years but a 2-0 midweek win over Atletico Madrid could be the perfect result to kick start their campaign.

Opponents Werder Bremen have been involved in a number of high-scoring affairs this season. Four of their six games have seen four goals or more.

Ole Werner’s side have been hard to get a handle on this season, losing to Augsburg but managing three late goals to beat Dortmund.

The percentage play, however, is that Leverkusen should have too much quality for a defence that has conceded 11 times in six matches.

With Patrik Schick and Callum Hudson-Odoi combining in forward areas and right-back Jeremie Frimpong impressing, Leverkusen will be a challenge to contain for most sides and are fancied to cover a one-goal start on the handicap.

Montpellier v Strasbourg

Strasbourg finished 20 points ahead of Montpellier last season but have had a disappointing start to the new campaign, drawing five of their opening seven games to remain one of only two Ligue 1 teams without a win this season.

Poor discipline has hamoered the Blue and Whites’ chances and they had a man sent off in their last two matches - draws against Brest and Clermont Foot.

They should get some joy against a Montpellier defence who have conceded at least two goals in 11 of their last 13 matches.

That leaky defence has been bailed out by a strong attack that has netted 17 times but only Marseille and PSG have a better defensive record than Strasbourg and that could prove the difference.

Take the visitors to get their first win of the season.
